Property Issues

Bremen Township Highway Department has no legal jurisdiction on unincorporated resident properties. Any issues on resident properties must me directed to Cook County Building and Zoning Department (312) 603-0500 or E-mail:  info.bnz@cookcountyil.gov.

Bremen Township works closely with Cook County Department of Transportation, for issues associated with roads and their easements. Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) provides us regulatory guidance for waterway and storm water issues.

Culvert and Driveway Permits

Bremen Township issues and oversees driveway and culvert replacement where road easements are part of these projects. The highway department’s involvement in these projects is to ensure proper water flow to and from culverts, and adjacent trenches for proper storm water flow between properties along roads.

Permit paperwork can be obtained at Township Administration Office or click this link.

Well Water Maintenance

Maintaining a water well involves both visual inspections, like checking the wellhead and casing, and professional inspections, like those by a well contractor every 5-10 years. Regular water testing, typically annually, is crucial for identifying potential contaminants and ensuring safe drinking water.

Wellhead and Casing Inspections:
  • Inspect the wellhead regularly: Check for cracks, damage, and proper sealing of the well cap. Ensure the vent is screened if present.
  • Keep the area clear: Remove debris and potential pollutants within 100 feet of the well.
  • Monitor the well casing: Look for any signs of damage, especially if you use a lawnmower near the well.
Professional Inspections and Maintenance:
  • Have a well contractor inspect the well system every 5-10 years: This includes the pump, storage tank, pipes, valves, and water flow.
  • Consider a well maintenance appointment: Especially after shutting down the system for the winter or if you notice any unusual changes.

Water Testing:
  • Test well water annually: Focus on coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrates, pH, and total dissolved solids.
  • Test for other contaminants:If you suspect or have reason to believe your well may have other contaminants, such as arsenic or radon, test for those as well.

Preventative Measures:
  • Avoid contamination: Don’t allow back-siphonage when mixing chemicals, and keep pesticides and other potentially harmful materials away from the well.
  • Protect the well from flooding: Ensure proper drainage around the well and avoid ponding water.
  • Maintain records: Keep records of well construction, maintenance, and water testing results.

Professional Help:
  • Contact a licensed well contractor:  For professional inspections, repairs, or when your well reaches the end of its serviceable life.
  • Hire a well maintenance service: Consider preventative maintenance services to keep your well in top condition.
